    The Skills and Tasks

    Frontend

Candidates should have the ability to read, understand and evaluate engineering plans and specifications, ability to read and understand technical writing and understand and interpret complex and technical information, and have basic experience with CADD software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, 3D Modeling Software, or InRoads. You should have a basic understanding of steel and concrete, pavement, geotechnical, roadway, or traffic design principals and the ability to understand engineering code.

    Geotechnical Engineering

The Geotechnical Engineering Section is tasked with providing foundation recommendations for all structures; it is comprised of a subsurface investigation team that takes borings, and a geologist that analyzes rock samples and administers the rock-fall hazard mitigation plan. The group provides slope stability analysis for the highway and rail network, and tests soil and aggregate samples.

    Structures & Hydraulics

The Structures and Hydraulics Section is committed to delivering Town, State, and Interstate Culvert and Bridge Projects and are proud to emphasize innovation in design, accelerated bridge construction, and alternative contracting techniques used to accelerate project delivery and underscore our commitment to quality, resiliency, and public engagement. The hydraulics unit uses its extensive knowledge in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, aquatic organism passage, bridge scour, and sediment transport to evaluate bridges and culverts around the state.

    Materials

The function of the Materials & Certification Section within the Construction & Materials Bureau is to ensure only quality materials are incorporated into the work. The materials & certification group provides acceptance testing at our AASHTO accredited facility in Berlin and provides sampling and testing oversight at bituminous and Portland cement production facilities. The Independent Assurance (IA) Unit provides an unbiased and independent evaluation of the Agency's Acceptance Program as identified in the Agency’s Quality Assurance Program.

    Roadway and Pavement Design

The Roadway and Pavement Design Sections are responsible for maintaining a large network of Vermont's highway system. This network includes approximately 3,200 miles of National Highway System (NHS), State Highway System (SHS), and Class I Town Highways. The Pavement Design Unit promotes a safe and well-maintained system of public use highways. Roadway projects often involve extensive coordination of Utilities and intersection design, along with ancillary assets such as signs, culverts, sidewalks, and guardrail.

    Aviation

The Aviation Program promotes a vibrant air transportation system in Vermont by assuring a safe, well-maintained system of public use airports, while also promoting aviation to develop sustainability in Vermont's aviation industry and at our airports.

    Rail Road

The Rail Section is in charge of project management of Railroad projects and maintenance coordination for all rail/highway crossings, rail bridges, embankments and culverts. The Rail section is also tasked with management of railway assets including inspection.

    The Attitude

    We're looking for someone who:

    Communicates well

Effective communication, whether it’s face-to-face, in a meeting, or in an email, is vital to fostering good teamwork amongst civil servants and the wider community.

    Gets fired up

Enthusiasm for your craft, passion for problem solving, and being fired up about public service is important to our team. We want someone who is all-in with our mission and vision.

    Has empathy

We're a tight-knit group of people who care for one another. The government needs someone who cares about their teammates and the citizens they work for.

    Is Ready to Learn...and Teach

We value potential over all else. We look for people who, with our investment, will grow quickly and contribute to our team's future. You won't be asked to fly solo, but you should be resourceful enough to find solutions when you're stuck. You’ll be surrounded by teammates with deep experience in design, cost estimating, CADD, planning, hydraulics, and materials but we expect to be learning just as much from you.
